John Hawkes

Often cast in character parts, singer-actor John Hawkes was born John Marvin Perkins in Alexandria, Minn., on Sept. 11, 1959. He moved south in the late 1970s and launched his career from Austin, Texas, where he co-founded the Big State Productions Theatre Company and played with the punk band Meat Joy.

Hawkes first impressed filmgoers with his performance in the 2000 blockbuster The Perfect Storm and increased his screen cachet in 2003 with his supporting role in Identity. In 2005, he played the central character in the critically lauded indie Me and You and Everyone We Know. Six years later, he won an Independent Spirit Award and scored an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of a hard-bitten Southerner in Winter's Bone.

Hawkes is also known for his turns as entrepreneurial Jewish merchant Sol Star on the HBO series "Deadwood" (2004-06) and Danny McBride's brother on "Eastbound & Down" (2009-10).
