In her first film role, Griffiths bowled over audiences with her scene-stealing performance as the titular character's best friend in Muriel's Wedding (1994). After appearing in several more British and Australian productions (including Children of the Revolution), Griffiths made her first big American movie, My Best Friend's Wedding (1997).
Griffith's biggest triumph, however, would come in 1998 when she received a Best Actress Oscar nomination for her performance opposite Emily Watson in Hilary and Jackie. Her continued success includes Emmy nods for her role in TV's "Brothers & Sisters."
