Hoping to provide her son Ryosuke (Masao Hayama, Shinichi Himori) with a better future, widowed factory worker Tsune (Chôko Iida) works tirelessly to send him to boarding school. But when she reunites with Ryosuke years later, she's disappointed to find him carving out a meager existence. Director Yasujiro Ozu made his first foray into films with dialogue with this 1936 drama about family, sacrifice and regret.
