Alice Faye stars as Entertainer Trudy Evans, a talented singer who pines for her social-climbing manager, Johnny (John Payne). When Johnny proposes to a snooty debutante, Trudy heads overseas and lands a star-making role in a London production. Set in late-19th-century San Francisco, H. Bruce Humberston's film features Faye's first performance of the popular ballad "You'll Never Know," which won the 1943 Oscar for Best Original Song.
