Unwilling to endure internment in a Nazi concentration camp, Jewish teenager Edith (Susan Strasberg) seeks help from a caring physician to hide her true identity. Successful in her ruse, Edith becomes a "kapò" -- a guard where her countrymen face torture and death. Writer-director Gillo Pontecorvo's disturbing character study earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film in 1960.
