In this artfully shot black-and-white film from Italian master Valerio Zurlini, Carlo (Jean-Louis Trintignant) and Roberta (Eleonora Rossi Drago) fall desperately in love, but politics and prejudice intervene. Set in final days of Mussolini's reign, the film explores what happens when the son of a high-ranking fascist becomes involved with a Navy officer's widow, forcing the pair to flee anti-fascists and confront the true horrors of war.
