While recuperating from an illness, a British engineer, Allan (Hugh Grant), falls in love with the beautiful Bengali teenage daughter (Supriya Pathak) of his hostess. When the young woman's family learns of the affair, a lovelorn Allan must leave the house. Meanwhile, Life magazine photographer Lucien Metz (John Hurt) convinces his friend that staying in India may not be in the heartbroken man's best interest. Nicolas Klotz directs.
