Set in the mid-1930s, this film tells the story of Carlo Levi (Gian Maria Volonte), who is exiled to a small Italian village fabled to be the end of the world. There, he learns from the simple villagers, whose salt-of-the-earth character and noble values are new to him. The real-life anti-fascist intellectual Levi eventually comes to terms with his isolation. Irene Pappas plays Giulia Venere, his brave housekeeper.
