Thirty years after his country was brutalized by civil war, neurosurgeon Dr. David Foster returns to his Spanish homeland, where he searches for Maria, a woman who treated his wounds incurred during the bloody conflict. Dr. Foster's quest takes place in a modernized Barcelona, with Maria nowhere to be found. But he does meet Maria's daughter (a dead ringer for her mother), which causes a flood of memories about homecoming and loss.
