Agnieszka, a female film student, is attempting to trace the history of Birkut, a long-forgotten "hero" of the Polish Communist government. In examining the truth about Birkut's life, Agnieszka discovers a greater truth about the bitter years in Poland during the 1950s and the difficult fate of the Communist Party. Director Andrzej Wajda's award-winning drama is a compelling attack on government corruption.
