The reunion of three sisters (Harriet Andersson, Ingrid Thulin and Liv Ullman), one of whom is dying, leads to painful revelations and long-suppressed emotions in this drama that would become one of the biggest critical triumphs of Swedish auteur Ingmar Bergman's career. Among the few foreign language films to be nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award, the film also won an Oscar for its moody photography.
