Charles Laughton stars as Albert Lory, a cowardly schoolteacher in German-occupied France. When local resistance fighter Paul Martin (Kent Smith) is betrayed and executed, suspicion centers on Lory, who is innocent. The Nazis offer him his freedom if he agrees to become a collaborator, but instead, the milquetoast Lory is drawn to the resistance. French expatriate Jean Renoir directs this Oscar-winning wartime drama.
