When her curmudgeonly father unexpectedly dies, modern wife Chizuko (Nobuko Miyamoto) and her husband, Wabisuke (Tsutomu Yamazaki), plan a three-day Buddhist funeral that involves complex rituals, exorbitant expenses and a motley crew of mourners -- including Wabisuke's mistress. In his first feature film, director Juzo Itami shows the separation between traditional Japanese values and the younger generation.
