This past fall when I watched every available Bunuel film I was a little disturbed at how uneven his Mexican work was considering after Archibaldo De La Cruz and Los Olvidados I had such grand expectations.

Having A sitting next to me at the screenings of "Vidiana" and "Susana" helped a lot, I guess. It's wonderful if you have an instinctively feeling that your companian feels and thinks about a film the same way and I hardly remember another film we enjoyed both so much as "Susana" (usually, I'm enthusiastic and he is so-so ). It was like a totally surreal combination of Paul Verhoeven, Russ Meyer, Douglas Sirk, Hitchcock and Bunuel's own style. And yet, it left a long and stimulating aftertaste, so it wasn't just quick amusement.

Looking forward to see "Gran Casino", A's description makes it sound delicious.

Gran Casino was recently released by Lionsgate (U.S.) in a 2-disc set with The Young One, a Mexican-American co-production which isn't exactly a masterpiece but I do prefer it to the former. Having said that, I'd still like to see more of his work on the big-screen.

Having said that, I'd still like to see more of his work on the big-screen. Come over to Nuremberg, they're mostly screened with English subtitles.

That doesn't bode well for the films you watched at the Berlinale. ): Well, it actually seems as there weren't too many outstanding films around in general. A and Matalo even left one screening because the film ("Coupable") was too terrible. They never did that before as far as I'm concerned. But a few light were shimmering such as "Just Anybody", "United Red Army" (this film is for you, arsaib!), "Otto; or, up with dead People" and "Loos Ornamental". Don't get too worried about A's comment, after all, he hasn't seen a masterpiece last year, though there were plenty around.

The Cremator is arguably my favorite Czech film but there are certainly some other good ones around. Not to be too self promoting but My Czech Film Fest thread would explain it a lot better than I could just going off of memory.

Yep, quite an interesting film. On a similar zany note is Lemonade Joe which can only be called the oddest Western I've ever seen.

On a similar zany note is Lemonade Joe which can only be called the oddest Western I've ever seen. And the German theatrical poster of this film is one of the oddest artworks I've ever seen. So far, that's what intrigues me about classic czech cinema: Are there more odd obscurities out there?

Regarding "Daisies", I think that Godard could've been jealous as hell of Vera Chytilová. She managed to achieve everything he tried so hard to achieve these years (I'd like to figure out what he achieved in any way, beside intellectual misanthropy and self-centered cinematic experiments).

But no Godard Discussion here, I'm still under shock because of your statement - "Godard is the greatest thing ever happened to the universe" - or something like that.
