For anyone who digs Danish films--they're so bleak and funny at the same time, what's not to like--keep an eye out for Paprika Steen's new film, Applause. She's simply brilliant. Might get an Oscar nomination? She plays a divorced stage actress with a drinking problem. Her work is to play Martha, the crazed nut job in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf. But then, she has to turn off the crazy (Martha or her true self?) and convince her ex she is ready to be a mother to her two small boys again. The emotional extremes Steen has to portray in this role are unbelievable! Oh and the ex and his new wife and the two boys know she's a brilliant stage actress so they're very cautious about letting her convince them. Plus, she has to convince herself! Great film. Oscar-caliber acting by Steen. She's one of my new favs now that I've seen Applause.
